WORKSHOP WITH MEDIA ON TRANS AND SEX WORKERS RIGHTS

 
 
On October 26-27 of 2018, “Right Side” human rights defender NGO conducted a workshop on rights for transgender people and sex workers with media representatives.
On the first day of the workshop the founder and the president of “Right Side” human rights defender NGO Lilit Martirosyan presented the structure of organization, its work and the needs of transgender people in Armenia.
The workshop was continued by the policy and program officer of “Right Side” human rights  defender NGO Ashot Gevorgyan  presenting the results of the research on “Hate crime and other hate motivated incidents against trans people in Armenia 2016-2017”. The next theme of the first day of the workshop was presented to the participants of the workshop by Lilit Martirosyan speaking about hormone replacement therapy and transition.
On the second day of the workshop participants summed up the knowledge gained on the previous day, talked about sex work and transgender sex workers’ rights in Armenia.
Mass media representatives together with transgender people presented the jointly written media materials, as well as summarizing the workshop, shared their further steps regarding ethical media coverage of the rights of transgender people and sex workers on the basis of fundamental human rights principles.
The president of “Right Side” human rights defender NGO Lilit Martirosyan expressed her gratitude to the present people giving certificates to the media representatives at the end of the workshop. She mentions that she hopes that after the workshop, the media materials about transgender people and sex workers will be more  knowledge-based and not be based on the stereotypical notions of the society, but will be covered rather from the human rights perspectives.
                          
The workshop was organized by “Right Side” human rights defender NGO with the financial support of European Endowment for Democracy.
