PUBLIC STATEMENT

March 31 marks the International Day of Transgender Visibility – a day that provides a platform for the transgender community and their allies to raise awareness, discuss vital issues, and educate people on what it means to be a trans person, as well as address common stereotypes about trans. This day also serves as a beacon of hope, highlighting the success stories of transgender individuals who are often overlooked and marginalized by society and mass media. For seven years, The Right Side human rights defender NGO has been at the forefront of campaigns aimed at increasing the visibility of transgender people, as well as documenting cases of hate crimes and discrimination, bringing these issues to national and international platforms. Unfortunately, transgender individuals in Armenia still continue to face discrimination, oppression, and violence in various aspects of their lives, as evidenced by recent incidents of physical violence and hate speech. The lack of acceptance and inaction by the society and state system, particularly the police, often leaves the transgender community defenseless, and homeless, and, in some cases, forces them to flee the country. While several European countries have implemented reforms aimed at ensuring the equality of transgender persons, Armenia still lags in this regard.

In light of these challenges, it continues to be urgent to raise the visibility of the transgender community. When society understands and accepts transgender individuals, they are more likely to receive the necessary protection and support to thrive. It is crucial to note that transgender people have always existed in our society, and as such, it is our duty to show solidarity and respect towards Trans LGBIQ individuals.

The Right Side NGO reminds that supporting transgender individuals is an integral part of strengthening democracy and establishing legal equality in Armenia. Let us use this day to change the world together so that every individual is treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their gender identity.

Highlighting the significance of International Transgender Day of Visibility,  on March 31 of this year, Right Side NGO organized a conference, which included the presentation of the organization’s legal report of the past year and a panel discussion with the participation of trans people and experts in the field.

We will publish more details about this event soon.
