THE PROCEEDINGS IN THE CASE OF BEATING A TRANS WOMAN AND STEALING HER PHONE WERE SENT TO THE COURT WITH AN INDICTMENT

On June 11, 2023, between 11 PM and midnight, a person named S. K. attacked trans woman D. in her own apartment and severely beat her. The man threw the trans woman to the ground and hit different parts of her body, causing physical injuries and bruises. Then, threatening to use a knife, he stole the mobile phone of the trans woman and left.

After the incident, trans woman D. submitted a report about the crime. The legal team of Right Side Human Rights Defender NGO is involved in this case and provides legal representation at all stages of the case.

Regarding the incident, a criminal proceeding was initiated in the investigation department of the Kentron and Nork-Marash administrative districts of the Yerevan City Department of the RA Investigative Committee. Trans Woman D. was recognized as a victim.

As a result of the investigative and evidentiary actions carried out during the preliminary investigation, which lasted for about a year, the complicity of S.K. in the committed act was fully substantiated.

On May 3, 2024, the investigator announced the end of the preliminary investigation, and the proceedings were sent to the court with an indictment.

The Right Side Human Rights Defender NGO condemns gender-based violence and will pursue the entire disclosure of the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice. Unfortunately, today in the Republic of Armenia there is an atmosphere of impunity that perpetuates violence against Trans and LGBIQ persons due to incomplete legal regulations, the absence of a law criminalizing discrimination against Trans and LGBIQ persons, and imperfect legal practices, which has created a fertile ground for harassment and violence against Trans and LGBIQ persons.

The Right Side Human Rights Defender NGO consistently collects and documents cases of discrimination and violence against Trans and LGBIQ persons and urges the RA Police to conduct a proper investigation to identify the perpetrators and hold them accountable to the full extent of the law.
