New Strategic Litigation on Legal Gender Recognition

Within the framework of its strategic litigation efforts, the Right Side Human Rights Defender NGO has submitted a legal claim on behalf of its beneficiary, transgender woman K.Gh., against the Civil Status Acts Registration Agency of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Armenia. The claim seeks to amend the gender marker in her birth certificate from "male" to "female."
The Administrative Court of the Republic of Armenia has admitted the case into proceedings and scheduled a hearing for September 10, 2025.
In a parallel initiative, Right Side NGO has also submitted an application to the European Court of Human Rights in a comparable case — K.A. v. the Republic of Armenia.
Through these legal actions, the organization seeks to catalyze essential legislative reforms regarding legal gender recognition, with the ultimate aim of advancing and safeguarding the rights of transgender individuals.
The denial of legal gender marker changes undermines the dignity of trans people, compelling them to navigate daily life with documentation that misrepresents their identity or gender expression.
