Ten Years of Struggle for Equal Rights

On January 27, the Right Side Human Rights Defender NGO marked the 10th anniversary of its work, reflecting on a decade-long journey of persistent struggle, overcome challenges, and the tangible changes and achievements made possible in the field of protecting the rights of the trans LGBIQ community in Armenia.

For Right Side, these ten years have represented not only a period of human rights advocacy, but also a path of standing alongside the trans LGBIQ community - making their voices heard and defending their right to a dignified and safe life.

The anniversary event was attended by representatives of diplomatic missions, civil society partners, international and local organizations, as well as members of the trans LGBIQ community and their allies.

The event opened with remarks by the organization’s President, Lilit Martirosyan, who reflected on the difficult and at times dangerous path the organization has traveled, emphasizing that the past decade has been marked by resilience, determination, and change. She stressed that Right Side’s work is not limited to legal assistance alone, but encompasses a broader social and human-centered mission.

This was followed by a presentation by the organization’s fundraising specialist, Anna Evoyan, who highlighted key achievements of Right Side over the past ten years, speaking about the organization’s development, the expansion of its programs, and the growth of international cooperation - factors that have played a significant role in strengthening its impact.

During the event, a short documentary film titled “The Trans Movement in Armenia: A Retrospective” was screened, presenting the history of the movement’s formation, its path, challenges, and achievements, and reminding the audience of the difficult yet persistent journey through which today’s changes have become possible.

The event concluded with words of appreciation and the presentation of certificates of gratitude to diplomatic missions, organizations, and individual activists who have stood alongside Right Side throughout these years and contributed to the protection of human rights and the building of a more inclusive and democratic Armenia - once again underscoring that this struggle is not only the story of an organization, but of an entire community and shared solidarity.
