Meeting-discussion with representatives of the sex worker community
On March 2 of this year, a meeting-discussion was held in the secure area of the “Rights Side” human rights NGO, in which representatives of the sex worker community from Yerevan and different regions of the Republic of Armenia participated. The meeting was moderated by Lilit Martirosyan, President of the “Rights Side” human rights NGO.
The following topics were discussed during the meeting:
Discrimination against sex workers.
Work-related issues.
Education gaps.
HIV/AIDS, STDs.
Covid-19 consequences.
Legal gaps.
Lilit thanked the representatives of the sex worker community for attending, then asked the participants to tell what problems they face.
Sex workers spoke about a number of problems, such as domestic violence, discrimination and ridicule from society, which they have faced for years. Some of those present told that they were abandoned by their relatives because of their choice of work, and noted that very often they even have to become victims of violence in their own families. L. Martirosyan conducted a needs mapping with sex workers in order to provide them with support through various programs in the future.
Documenting a number of violations, L. Martirosyan asked the participants not to leave any case of discrimination unanswered and to inform the organization about it, and also added that in any case the NGO will provide them with legal representation in the police and courts.
The sex workers present at the meeting asked to ensure their involvement in educational events, seminars and other programs implemented by the organization.
Lilit Martirosyan presented in detail about HIV/AIDS, STD transmission routes, methods of their prevention and treatment. The participants were also presented with the future programs of the NGO, which will be aimed at protecting the health of sex workers and raising awareness about sexual health. The sex workers present at the meeting asked the NGO to continue research on HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections.
Sex workers said that they were in a difficult financial situation during the pandemic, as they were forced to self-isolate and were unable to engage in sex work, for many of whom sex work is the only source of income. It should be noted that administrative fines of twenty times the minimum wage are still in force for sex workers, and if the same actions are committed within a year after the imposition of an administrative fine, they are subject to a fine of forty times the minimum wage.
The meeting was held with heated discussions, the participants presented all the cases they face, shared personal stories about how the cases of violence and discrimination against them are increasing day by day.
