Attempted assault on trans woman in her own apartment

In May 2020, a transgender woman L., who was regularly subjected to violence in her family because of her gender identity, applied to the “Iravunkki Pasha” human rights NGO. At her request, the IRA supported her in moving to Yerevan.

Late in the evening of June 5, Lilit Martirosyan, president of the “Iravunkki Pasha” human rights NGO, received a phone call from transgender L., who reported that transgender L.’s family members had discovered her place of residence and were threatening to break down the door and kill her if she did not come out.

Lilit Martirosyan alerted the IRA lawyer, who in turn alerted the police. The police arrived at transgender L.’s apartment, from where her relatives were taken to the police station.

At the police station, with the help of a lawyer, transgender L. files a complaint about the assault and leaves the police station.

While leaving the police station, transgender L.’s father tried to attack L. and the ICRC lawyer, but the ICRC lawyer prevented the attack.

Transgender L. is currently in a safe area and is negotiating with family members.

The Right to Justice NGO will provide support to a transgender woman within the framework of the social assistance program.
