Right to Education: For an Inclusive and Safe Environment

Today, on September 1, we mark Knowledge Day. Yet in Armenia, the path to education remains full of obstacles for many LGBTIQ+ pupils and students. Over the past year alone, Right Side Human Rights Defender NGO has documented 18 cases when LGBTIQ+ community members were subjected to bullying and discrimination at schools or universities, or felt compelled to discontinue their studies because of their gender identity or sexual orientation.
This exclusion from education leads to serious consequences. Due to discrimination and unequal access to education, many LGBTIQ+ individuals later face significant challenges in finding employment and achieving professional development. A large number are pushed into difficult economic situations, which further increases the risks of social isolation and vulnerability.
Education is a fundamental right that must be guaranteed for everyone, without exception. No pupil or student should be deprived of the opportunity to gain knowledge and develop their potential simply because they are different.
For years, Right Side NGO has been implementing educational programs and initiatives such as seminars, learning camps, and discussions. These efforts aim not only to empower LGBTIQ+ youth, but also to contribute to the creation of an inclusive and safe educational environment where every individual can study with dignity and respect.
On this Knowledge Day, we call on state authorities and educational institutions to act decisively so that no pupil or student faces discrimination or fear. The doors of knowledge must remain open to all, and education must serve as the tool that unlocks equal opportunities for everyone.
